English text call support and personalised wake words are coming with the latest Bixby version.

With One UI 5, Samsung debuted the Bixby Text Call feature, but it was initially only available in Korean. The business is currently adapting its virtual assistant to accept calls in English (on phones running One UI 5.1).

Text Call essentially transforms voice calls into text chats, in case you missed this option. It listens to the other party and converts what they say into text before allowing you to type a response that will be read out by the text-to-speech technology. Similar to Google’s Screen Call function is this.

This is useful in situations where you can’t communicate, like when it’s too loud, or when you don’t want to bother those nearby. The best approach might not be using a fake voice that sounds nothing like you.

Bixby can learn to mimic your speech, therefore there is a cure for that. You can record various lines and let the software generate an AI-powered duplicate. But, for the time being, the Bixby Custom Voice Maker is still only accessible in Korean. This will expand beyond Text Call as there are plans to employ the customised voice in other Samsung applications.

One cool upgrade to Bixby is the ability to set a personalised wake word. In the past, you could simply say “Hello, Bixby” or “Bixby.” When this update is released, you’ll be able to call your phone “computer” and fulfil your inner Jean-Luc Picard fantasies.

Bixby is also becoming more intelligent and can now comprehend context that spans many apps. For instance, if you ask Samsung Health to start a workout and then say, “Play music for this workout,” the AI will choose songs that are appropriate for the kind of workout you requested. Moreover, Bixby can sync with the Calendar app and store your appointments for you.

Modern AI is heavily reliant on the cloud, which creates privacy issues. Samsung has been attempting to make frequently used commands fully offline in order to alleviate those issues. The turning on of the flashlight, taking a screenshot, and establishing a timer are a few examples. Voice dictation powered by AI is also available offline (currently supports English, Spanish, French, Italian, German and Korean).
