From disruptive floods to severe drought,
climate change is an ever increasing
threat to Africa. in particular according
to a report by the United Nations body,
the volume of water in Africa’s major
rivers has decreased rapidly since 2021.
according to the state of global Water
Resources ,the water discharge in the
rivers in Niger, Volta, Nile and Congo was
less than the average calculated between
the years 2002 and 2020. however since
2002 ,the water storage levels in these
river basins also known as terrestrial
water storage ,or tws has decreased. the
Congo and the Nile River Basin showed
the most Improvement.
according to the report by state of
global Water Resources, tws decreased in
all continents except Africa between
2002 and 2021.
however ,the trend in other parts of the
continent May indicate a different
direction.
the increase in water levels does not
board well for the continent. during the
Kenyan floods in 2020 at least 800 000
people were displaced . eventually leading
to the diversion of flooded water into
Lake Victoria .which is also Africa’s
largest lake.
according to Trends reveals by revealed
by the National Aeronautics and Space
Administration of the U.S, the Victoria
Lake reached its highest level in
decades in June of 2021. resulting in
long-term intense rainfall.
this year Horn of Africa
suffered the most severe droughts at
least 23 million people in the Somali
Capital .rather the peninsula suffered
acute food shortages leaving millions of
residents displaced.
