Liquid Tree: ultimate solution to air pollution

The first urban photo bioreactor in Serbia, called a liquid tree, was created to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and enhance air quality in highly populated regions. The system holds 600 litres of water and microalgae that use photosynthesis to bind carbon dioxide and produce clean oxygen.

As explained by one of the project’s creators from the University of Belgrade’s Institute for Multidisciplinary Research. The liquid free is more effective than planting two new trees that are 10 years old or 200 square metres of grass. Although it serves the same purpose as trees and grass, microalgae may live in contaminated areas where trees cannot. The liquid free is meant to fill in urban areas where it is impossible to plant trees without eradicating existing woods or existing tree planting plants. The liquid tree will be situated in an area with high carbon dioxide emissions and function as a bench with phone charging ports and a solar panel that powers nighttime lighting.

The initiative intends to popularise and increase Salvia’s usage of microalgae, which can be utilised as a compost for waste water treatment, to produce biomass and biofuels, and especially to purify the air.
