Local Marmot To Forecast Whether There Will Be Another Winter

BOULDER (KDVR) — Located in Colorado Boulder has its own weather-forecasting rodent, but Colorado may not be the home of Punxsutawney Phil, the famed groundhog who predicts whether there will be six more weeks of winter or an early spring.

Boulder’s top-hat sporting stuffed marmot is called Flatiron Freddy. He will forecast whether or not there will be more winter on Groundhog Day.

This odd and unusual custom has been a Boulder tradition for more than ten years, according to the City of Boulder.

The Flatiron Freddy community programme will explain on Thursday why a genuine groundhog in Colorado will never see his shadow and why Groundhog Day has something to do with stars.

In Boulder’s Flagstaff Nature Centre more than ten years ago, a stuffed yellow-bellied marmot named Flatiron Freddy lived quietly. Freddy was left outside one winter, which caused damage to his fur.

The rangers thought the marmot deserved more, and they decided against removing him from the centre. Since that time, Freddy has appeared on Groundhog Day every year in different ways after emerging from his hole.
