Climate Change | Heavy Rain Triggers Floods In Lisbon

rains triggered floods in Portugal’s

capital on Wednesday, a 55 year old woman

was killed after being trapped in the

basement of her house . the local

authorities issued red weather warnings

due to the intense rainfall and the

strong winds,  and sharp roads and the

city tunnels around the capitol mayor

Carlos modes visited some of the flooded

areas .and said that a work to build a

five kilometer drainage tunnel will be

starting soon.

we experienced a phenomenon of great

magnitude with more than 86 millimeter

water between 5 AM and 1 am. we had a lot

of interventions to make by midnight. we

had nearly 170 simultaneous firefighter

interventions, in cooperation with the

Municipal Police and civil protection. we

worked all night with the staff there to

try to deal with the many problems.

meanwhile the Civil Protection Agency

instructed the citizens to not leave

their homes and avoid low-level areas.

Fernandez appealed the people to not

leave their homes during these periods

of heavy rainfall . Fernandez urged the

residents living in the low-lying areas

to seek shelter in safe places.

the water came all the way down to our

knees , everything inside is ruined. all

the refrigerators nothing works, I do not

know when we will be able to reopen to

top it all off it is a holiday. the

insurers are closed.

the rains are expected to continue until

Friday.
